What You Should Know Before Beginning
The Adobe Acrobat User Interface
- The Acrobat 7.0 work space consists of 6 components (See Figure 1 - 3 Acrobat 7.0 Work Space) .

- The choices on the Menu Bar are File, Edit, View, Document, Comments, Tools, Advanced, Window and Help. The accelerator keys for each of these menu commands is the Alt Key plus the first letter of the command. For example, the accelerator key for the File command is ALT + F and for the Document command is ALT + D. Accelerator keys are also underlined on the menu bar (See Figure 1 - 4 Acrobat 7.0 Menu Bar) .

- Area where icons indicate specific actions, such as open a document, or create PDF from Web Page. Figure 1 - 5 shows an undocked view of the Acrobat 7.0 Toolbars with button labels turned off. Users also can dock the toolbars if they prefer.
What Do All Those Little Icons Mean?
- If you ever wanted to know what those toolbar icons represent a helpful selection is View > Toolbars > Show Button Labels (See Figure 1 - 6 Undocked View of Acrobat Toolbars With Labels On) .

- The Status Bar adjust views, show/hide toolbars, navigate pages, adjust page display properties (See Figure 1 - 7 Close Up of Acrobat 7.0 Professional Status Bar) .

- The Navigation Pane is used to provide alternate views of a PDF file. Default tabs are: Attachments, Bookmarks, Comments, Pages, and Signatures.
- Additional palettes are Articles, Content, Destinations, Fields, Info, Layers, Order, and Signatures. Navigation Pane palettes can be displayed in the navigation pane by choosing View > Navigation Tabs from the Menu Bar. The first time a navigation tab is selected, it will appear in the middle of the document pane. Users can drag and drop the newly displayed tab onto the navigation pane area or can select View > Navigation Tabs > Dock All Tabs to move the tabs onto the Navigation Pane. Figure 1 - 8 shows the Navigation Pane displaying the Tags Palette for a PDF document.

- This is where the pages of an open document are displayed within the Acrobat application. At the appropriate magnification levels, there are scroll bars to move the page up or down or left to right. When the document is sized within the window, either vertically or horizontally, these scroll bars disappear. Figure 1 - 9 shows the Document Pane displaying a page from a PDF file. The horizontal and vertical scroll bars have been highlighted.

- Items in the How to Window are either automatically generated (Running a full accessibility check) or invoked from the Help option on the Menu bar. Items in the How To Window provide detailed instructions for performing a specific task within Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional There are several topics available in the How To Window: Acrobat Essentials, Create PDF, Comment and Mark Up, Forms, Secure, Sign, Print Production, Viewing Large Format Documents, a link to Online Support from Adobe Systems, and invoking Acrobat 7.0's Help files (F1 key). Figure 1 - 10 shows the Create PDF topic displayed within the How To Window. The topic on creating accessible PDF files has been highlighted. You can also invoke any of this topics by choosing Help > How To from the Acrobat 7.0 Professional menu.
