The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) was adopted by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to replace the Data Encryption Standard (DES).

With regard to PDF; Adobe added 128 bit AES to PDF 1.7; and, 256 bit AES to PDF 1.8.
