Appligent Document Solutions licenses the Adobe PDF Library

Appligent Document Solutions has announced that it has licensed Adobe Systems' PDF Library and will soon release updated versions of its existing products that incorporate the new technology. The Adobe PDF Library is also the core technology behind Adobe's flagship product, Adobe Acrobat.

Updating a software company's core library is a major event. An Appligent webpage dedicated to explaining the rationale behind the switch lists two main reasons:

1. Adobe Systems puts several orders of magnitude more effort into improving their ability to open and process PDF files than any other organization. With the Adobe PDF Library, we leverage Adobe's massive engineering investment, gaining Adobe's ability to deal with corrupt and malformed PDF files, and freeing our developers to focus on customer needs.
2. Our clients demand the latest capabilities. With Adobe's PDF Library, we gain the same advanced PDF manipulation and standards-compliance capabilities as Adobe deploys in their flagship Acrobat software.

In terms of compatibility, the Adobe PDF Library updates will essentially be a "drop-in" upgrades for existing users, and customers with active support and maintenance agreements will be upgraded as products become available. Additionally, existing Appligent software customers without current support now have until October 31st to take advantage of the company's Support and Maintenance Amnesty.

"Under Appligent Document Solutions Support Amnesty, existing customers without support can get current and gain access to the pending upgrades. If they become current by October 31, they can do this for only 20% of the current retail price," clarified Johnson.

In addition to the upgrades, Appligent is also set to release a range of brand-new commercial server software that will be built using Adobe's PDF technology. Johnson wasn't shy on the topic of release schedules, "There will be a slew of releases over the next couple of quarters."
