You can find these documents on the installation CD and in the default installation directory.
New Features
Redax 4.6 has the following new features:
- Access to the Redax Users Guide has been added to the Redax menu. Clicking on Redax > View User Guide will open the Redax Users Guide in Acrobat.
- Redax functions in the multiple document interface (MDI). When Acrobat is in the single document interface (SDI) a warning will open in Acrobat letting you know that you must be in MDI mode for Redax to function. A checkbox has been added to the warning to turn off the MDI warning when Acrobat opens.
Acrobat 8 Document Interface
The document interface on Windows was changed in Acrobat 8 to a single document interface (SDI) which displays each document in a single top-level floating window. Redax will only function in the multiple document interface (MDI) which can be re-enabled via the preferences panel. Change the preferences by:
- Start Acrobat.
- Choose Edit > Preferences
- Choose Documents from the column on the left side of the dialog window.
- At the top of the Open Settings, uncheck Show each document in its own window (requires restart).
- Close and restart Acrobat.
Known Issues
The following are known issues in Redax 4.5. They are grouped alphabetically by type of issue.
Acrobat 8
- Acrobat 8 is only supported by Redax versions 4.5 and later.
- When drawing Redax boxes in Acrobat 8 you must click on the mouse, wait a moment and then move the mouse to draw the box. Clicking and drawing the box right away may cause the boxes to not appear in the correct location.
- In Acrobat 8, if there are Acrobat redaction markups as well as Redax boxes and you attempt to save the redacted version you will get the following message because the Acrobat markup has not been redacted:
"This document contains redaction marks that have not yet been applied. Any content associated with these marks will still be present until they are applied. Are you sure you want to continue"
Avoid this message by using Redax > Convert Markup... and check the box next to Acrobat markup along with any other markup that you may want to redact. Select Redact, Redax Boxes and Markup by clicking on the radio button next to that option in the Convert Markup dialog window and click OK. All Redax and Acrobat redaction markup will be redacted and all annotations will be removed.
Acrobat 8 and Vista OS Environment
There is a display anomaly when entering information into any multi-line field in the Redax Preferences or the Full Page Range dialogs using Acrobat 8 under Vista.
When the dialog is opened, or when the mouse is dragged over multi-line fields, the fields may look grayed out, unavailable or blank. Clicking into these fields will display the field data and allow you to edit the field. While the field data may not be visible after you leave the field, the information is still there, and can be viewed by clicking back into the field.
All multi-line fields in Redax dialogs are affected:
- Redax Preferences > Redax Box tab: Exemption, Note
- Page Range dialog: Exemption code
Acrobat 6
- Tool Tips are not supported under Acrobat 6.
- When you draw a Redax box in Acrobat 6 and then use the next page button to go forward, the box will flash briefly and appear black. This is a display anomaly only and can be ignored.
Adobe Website Message
If you click on a Redax box without having Redax installed, you will be asked to search Adobe's website for a Redax plug-in. Choose No.
Category
When looking at Categories in the Redax Preferences or Redax Box Properties dialogs, small check boxes may appear next to each Category name. These can be ignored.
Exemption Codes
- When you select Word Wrap Exemption Codes on the Redactions tab of the Redax Preferences dialog box, exemption codes appear at the top-left of the redacted area, even if the Position option is set to Center or Bottom Left. Word wrap is not supported when Position is set to Bottom of Page. Exemption codes are placed at the bottom of the page but do not wrap.
- Exemption codes do not wrap in Redax boxes. If an exemption code exceeds the width of the box, it will appear to be clipped. You can view the full exemption code in a tooltip by moving the pointer over the Redax box, or in the Redax Box Properties dialog box by double-clicking the Redax box.
Exemption Code Palettes
If you create a new exemption code palette, it will not be visible in the Show/Hide menu until you close and reopen Acrobat.
Find Path Areas
It is not recommended to use the Redax > Find Areas > Find Path Areas on documents that contain graphics or drawing areas that are made up of huge numbers of paths. This can cause Redax to produce a huge number of Redax boxes which will dramatically increase the file size and take a very long time to process.
Find Using List Editor
If the list window is completely full and there is no white space to click into, you are unable to add more exemption codes. Work around is to delete some of the exemption codes or manually create a new file and import the file back into the Find Using List Editor.
You can use the Export File... and Import File... buttons in the Find Using List editor to save your existing list to a text file. Then use a text editor such as Note Pad to add the additional information.
Markup Find Using List/Find Using Patterns
- Black boxes may appear momentarily on the screen when you run Find Using List under Acrobat 6.
- Large highlights are sometimes drawn on the page when running Find Using Patterns or when running Find Using List on rotated pages.
- There is some overlap in the Social Security number and zip code patterns. For example, a pattern search on either Social Security number or zip code will find this pattern: nnnnn-nnnn.
Preferences
On the Options tab of the Redax Preferences dialog box, the Redax Enterprise Server Style XML File export option is not available. All templates are exported as Redax text files.
Printing
If you print a file with Redax boxes from Acrobat 7, the file might take a long time to process. Also, at times, the Redax boxes print but the page content does not. If you experience any of these problems, try printing from Reader 7.
Note: This is an issue with the Acrobat 7 product. It occurs when you apply any type of annotation to a page.
Redaction
- When bitmap images are redacted, the redacted portion of the image is replaced with white or other color space. Occasionally in some files, black space is used instead. When this occurs, the redacted image area appears darker than other redacted areas.
- If you are using Acrobat 7 on Windows, and you redact information on a page that contains images, the text and images might at times appear to be slightly grayed following redaction.
- At times with manual redaction of PDFs created using Capture, a very narrow band does not redact. Selecting Find Image Areas will create a series of horizontal Redax boxes over an image. Redaction does not take place between these boxes. These are very narrow bands and might not leave relevant traces behind.
Redaction Character
Redax 4.5 no longer supports filling a redacted area with a Redaction Character eliminating issues regarding character availability in PDF documents.
Redax Boxes
Redax boxes drawn in prior versions of Redax are not automatically updated. For example, exemption codes might be displayed above the Redax box rather than within it, or the Redax box might not be visible. To update the Redax boxes in your document, select Redax > Redax Preferences, and click Apply Changes to Current Document. Clear all of the check boxes in the Change All Redax Boxes dialog box, and then click OK.
Report Window
When the Report Window first opens it does not expand to display the entire line of information for Redax boxes. You can resize the window by clicking on the lower right corner of the window and drag the window to the size you want.
